One of the regular criticisms that is lodged at me from the right is my friendly nature with Democrats and members of the media who are loathed by the majority of people on the right. From Joe Scarborough to Jake Tapper to James Carville to Donna Brazile to a host of reporters at major publications and elected Democrats, these are all people I have personally known for a very long time and like very much, even as we might disagree.
I really do take seriously that if we are all created in God’s image, we all have something to learn from each other, even when we might disagree. And honestly, I enjoy hanging out with my Democratic friends because (A) we don’t talk politics and (B) we all know, regardless of party, who the hucksters are. You’d be amazed at the “political strategists” on television who just licked envelopes in a campaign office, but their daddy had TV connections.
The same conservatives who are upset at my personal friendships are the same ones claiming that Barack Obama is really in charge of this White House. They are epistemically convinced that while Biden sleeps from 8 PM to 8 AM, Obama is calling the shots. The other day, one angrily emailed me that the proof Obama was in charge is that Susan Rice is there. But Rice left over a year ago. Only four cabinet-level officers even have ties to the Obama Administration, and two of those only ties were working for then-Vice President Biden.
I know from my relationships with both well-sourced reporters and with high-level Democrats that this is not true. The Biden team hates the Obama team, and the Obama team hates the Biden team. The Biden team feels betrayed by Obama backing Hillary in 2016, believing that a sharper, younger Biden could have easily beaten Trump that cycle. The Obama team believes the Biden team is responsible for the pending election wipeout because they allowed the disastrous presidential debate to happen. Many of the Obama guys are ratcheting up the public (and private) pressure on Biden to step aside, but also know if they’re the faces of the efforts, Biden will dig in his heels. These two sides hate each other.
I know that Joe Biden and his team are still in charge because the chaos in foreign and domestic affairs is exactly what I would expect from a declining 81-year-old President with dementia surrounded by a group of arrogant advisors whose arrogance is only rivaled by their incompetence. Do you really think things would be this chaotic if Barack Obama was really in charge? Only a dementia patient who works from 10 AM to 4 PM could come up with conflicting and incoherent policies on everything from the border to energy to Israel to crime to the economy. Guys, this is Joe Biden and Joe Biden’s hand-picked people at work.
Say what you will about Obama and his team, but they pulled off something increasingly not likely for Biden — winning a second term. Watch:
One of the traits that makes you credible is your network of connections on both (all?) sides of the political spectrum; too bad some of your listeners can't appreciate that fact.
As I told my sister this weekend- I know Obama is not pulling the strings because of the ineffectiveness/disarray coming out of the White House. I didn't like the guy or his policies but there was no confusion coming out of DC when he was president...
Eric, I do agree with wholeheartedly on this. I think it is a shame that we have become so polarized politically in our nation. I am a conservative, but I have very dear, long time friends that hate Trump and think Biden is OK. We do not talk politics but do have much other things in common, especially friendship. Being so divided is not good for our society, and that aspect troubles me. I will however, be voting for Trump. Biden lost me decades ago. I think he has always been a jackass.
