Kamala Harris is heading to Florida to spread a blatant lie about Ron DeSantis with the help of the mainstream press. The Vice President is claiming Florida’s school curriculum is pushing forward “revisionist history” by suggesting that slavery was good for slaves.
“Just yesterday in the state of Florida, they decided middle school students will be taught that enslaved people benefited from slavery… They insult us in an attempt to gaslight us, and we will not stand for it.”
The line in question in Florida’s school curriculum is a single reference to a slave’s ability to learn skills while enslaved. As National Review points out, the reference is one out of 190 mentions of slavery in the curriculum that spans the earliest recordings of slavery and ends with “the integration of the University of Florida.”
If the goal of the curriculum was to whitewash slavery, it is hard to understand why it covers the notoriously harsh living conditions of slaves in North America, the South’s attempt to end the underground railroad, the overwhelming death rates among slaves, and the challenges African Americans faced after slavery was abolished.
As Harris heads to Florida to allege that DeSantis is whitewashing African American history, mainstream press outlets will predictably omit the copious fact-checked reports that seem to only follow Republicans when they are in the White House. In other words, more business as usual for mainstream media outlets.
Thanks to Charles Cooke at National Review for wading through all the curriculum requirements. You can find the full list in Charles’s piece at NRO.
