Last night, before bed, we left out McDonalds, well done steak, and Diet Coke for Santa Trump. It was January 6th Eve. This morning, we woke up, the door had been smashed in, all the food was gone, and a MAGA flag was tucked under the Christmas tree (it comes down today).
Merry January 6, everyone.
The most well armed group of rednecks in American history since the Civil War convened in Washington, D.C. three years ago and, instead of bringing all their guns, brought MAGA and “Don’t Tread on Me” flags and caps.
They stormed the United States Capitol in the first insurrection in history without swords or guns. The left would have us believe it was the second coming of the French Revolution.
I have no use for the coordinated “Big Lie” spins of the left and press on this.
Nor do I have any use for justifying or ameliorating what January 6th was.
It was a rally turned riot fueled by the lies of a failed politician trying desperately to hold on to power and, if not, cash in on the anxieties of those he had failed through lack of impulse control and campaign discipline.
It was not an insurrection.
It was disgraceful conduct fueled by lies many people still believe and I have no real sympathy for the Proud Boys carted off the jail even as I find some sentences excessive. It is absolutely true there were people with malicious intent in the crowd that entered. Zip tie boy can rot in jail. It is absolutely true that a variety of grifting apologists have tried to excuse, absolve, and lie about the conduct that day to pretend it all away.
January 6th has now become, for both sides, a grifting operation where they tell you what you want to hear so long as you keep writing checks to the side of your choice.
In Atlanta, Georgia, there’s a massive cyclorama. It is a painting in the round. One walks into the center of the painting and is surrounded on all sides by it. The painting was made to commemorate the Battle of Atlanta. Prepared by German painters for people in Illinois, it was purchased by a man from Atlanta who had the painting touched up to turn the Battle of Atlanta from a Confederate defeat into a Confederate victory. It was billed, upon release in Atlanta, as the greatest Confederate victory of the Civil War.
People went in already wanting to believe. They came away proud of what the Confederates did. The man who purchased the cyclorama and repainted it was able to make his money back. Later, the painting was restored to show, again, the Union victory. If you are ever in Atlanta, it is worth the price of admission to see it.
Both sides have done much the same to January 6th. To the left, it is an insurrection and no matter how much you condemn it, if you are unwilling to call it an insurrection, you support it.
To many Trump supporters, it was nothing, the people were all innocence, the cause was just, the FBI started it, and Ashley Babbitt was a martyr.
The reality is it was a riot fueled by Donald Trump and his surrogates’ lies. It was disgraceful and Ashley Babbitt, an American veteran, lost her life fighting on the wrong side, trying to let people through to a secure area where members of Congress were fleeing — all caught on video tape.
The truth is not that complicated, but both sides want their own truth and not the actual truth. As far as I’m concerned, a pox on all of them.
To the extent the Democrats intend to use January 6th as some rallying cry for the preservation of democracy while seeking to deprive Donald Trump of ballot access through extra-democratic means and both indoctrinate Americans with their own lies and claim they, the party that sued nuns to force them to pay for abortions, will preserve democracy — the Democrats and Joe Biden can pound sand. They deserve mockery. They are the totalitarians they warned us about.
The party that turned a blind eye to burning down American cities and now has its most vocal members okay with the genocide of Jews can roundly be ignored.
And to my friends in the media who use “the Big Lie,” you are co-opting that idea that was used about Hitler and the Nazis to vilify a large portion of Americans who hate you as much as you hate them. You are, frankly, part of the problem but have convinced yourself of the righteousness of your supposed truth telling.
The Big Lie is about Hitler and blaming the Jews, not about Trump and the 2020 election. To use that phrase now, as Hamas supporters march through the Ivy League and university presidents think context matters when it comes to the extermination of Jews is just too much.
But I’m sure you’ll find a way to rationalize still using the phrase just as both Democrats and Trump supporters rationalize their own excuse making and story telling.
For the rest of us, don’t let the jackasses make you, too, go insane. Life’s too short to turn politics into your god and, at some point, God Almighty Himself will introduce both the eighty year olds to His version of term limits. So focus on principles, not people. And for those of you thoroughly incensed with what I have written, repent.
Have a wonderful and Merry January 6th. It is Epiphany. Christ has come for all.
Like a few people leaving comments for Eric, I'm leaving this subscription. There just too much evidence that Jan 6 was potentially caused, or at least exacerbated by the FBI and maybe other branches of government. Suggest listening to Tucker's interview with Rep. Clay Higgins of the House Oversight Committee.
This has nothing to do with liking Trump (I don't) but maybe a lot about intellectual dishonesty. Some people just can't divorce the guy's personality or moral shortcomings from policies that are good for this country. I don't see any middle ground on that latter.
I know announcing ones departure from a platform is totally unnecessary, but I want to say why I am going. Since everyone whose opinion I want to see requires a subscription, and I can't subscribe to all of them, I have to decide when someone has staked out a position and will not change or alter it, no matter what and if that person is one I want to continue to pay to hear. I am pretty far from a die hard Trump fan. I didn't want him the first time and I don't want him to be the nominee now. But I can still be objective enough to know that there was absolutely election interference from government entities at every level, the media, and operators in both parties to keep him from winning in 2020. Whether one wishes to call it a "steal" or just dirty dealings, it happened. I cannot say and no one can, how much effect it had on the outcome. As for the "insurrection", no it wasn't. And no, it also wasn't a totally insignificant incident. However, it was also obviously, to some extent, incited by planted agitators, perhaps a few legit Trump supporters with ill intent, but mostly a bunch of gullible people who had no idea what was happening and got caught up. No one deserves years in prison for anything that happened and if you watch more than just the democrat approved videos, you will see that. A stubborn refusal to acknowledge what we can see and hear from video is not a position I want to hear from someone I pay to hear. And that is all. Now I figure out how to unsubscribe and go pay to listen to someone else for a while. One needn't be so open minded ones brains fall out, but being so closed minded one cannot see what is right in front of them is equally bad.
