Unlike a lot of conservatives gleefully cheering on Mitch McConnell’s announcement that he will step down as Senate Republican Leader in November, after the election, I actually paid a price for vocally opposing McConnell.
I’m waiting for the perfect politician that does everything just right and is always looking out for the little people and the country does anyone know a person fitting this description
Wow! I forgot all of that. Thanks for the reminder. I’ve been very critical of Mitch but it takes a brave & strong person to within stand all the criticism & dislike for a principle not easily seen by outsiders. Thanks, Eric .
We can be naïve about how things should work in Washington, but there is a long history of backroom politics and deal making compromises that has made our country a pretty good place.
I have often defended McConnell to some of my only Trump friends for some of the accomplishments that Erick pointed out. Maybe we can all start to heal soon and recognize the goodness where it actually exists.
You were tough on him. I took some heat, but it was worth it. I know your feelings about Trump. I’m the polar opposite, but do know I totally respect your positions. Regardless of where any Republican sits right now, we do need to figure it out and come together because the other side is truly out of control.
Bingo! Ironically, a political leader who was effective precisely because he didn't care about his national popularity ratings---which is, theoretically, what many claim to want in their leaders. I think he always understood the art of the possible better than other elected officials who preferred the cheers of the choir on television or social media---and better than many of us among the general public.
I would appreciate hearing what Erick says about the House Freedom Caucus sending out a totally lacking in grace “X” tweet gloating about Mitch leaving.
I disagreed with McConnell a lot but he did an amazing job protecting the Constitution by getting so many conservative judges appointed. I totally respect his ability as a legislator, best I’ve seen. I’m glad he chose to step down with his dignity intact.
This piece is why I support this blog. It's honest. I'd be mighty happy if we had more of that in the folks who comment on our politics, culture and faith. There were many times I wanted to scream against MM's stance and his politics, but in the end, we got many things conservatives desperately wanted. Unfortunately, in politics, compromise is the yellow brick road. I absolutely hate that, but it's the way things get done. Though I abhor a lot of things in our political system, we still have to live within it, and though perverted more every day, it's still the best thing going on the world stage. Just wish it didn't transform so many of the folks in it into self-serving a-holes. Thanks Erick. Keep up the good work.
I do give Mitch credit for getting conservative judges appointed at SCOTUS and Appeals Courts. I guess we should be happy with that, as the GOP in general is feckless and perfectly happy being the party out of power, graciously accepting the scraps thrown to them by the Democrats.
Erick thanks for reminding me of the good things McConnell did but I still don’t like back room deals at midnight on 1000 page bills that nobody has read. I believe in my country and it’s citizens first. In other words fix the border first then we can worry about Ukraines border. I understand that there is give and take in politics and Mitch is very good at it but we need less give and a lot more take on the border. As a conservative I want things my way but I realize that you don’t get the whole loaf of bread so you half to settle for a few slices
Good article

Nicely done.

Excellent article! While I may not always agree with McConnell, I totally admire him and what he has accomplished.
I’m not and never have been a Mitch fan, but it would be silly to deny a lot of the good he accomplished. Great reminder, Erick!
And you, unlike most here, know how much crap you got because of me because I was so critical of him. LOLOL.

Erick, you're a Class Act, like you, I know when to tip my hat!

Well said.
He knew how to play politics. Not a game for amateurs.
