You will have to forgive a piece that is not at all about politics and the current cultural contretemps of modern American society. Instead, I want to use these words to recommend as forcefully as possible a television show that you should be watching. But first, you must have a history lesson.
Read the book. Loved it. Saw the first series. Thanks for the 5stars on this new one. Also Gentleman in Moscow is out now on Paramount and is great. Reveals the corruption in the transfer of one power system to another.
Contra infomercials & click-bait writing that puts off the most important information for reasons other than the reader’s benefit, I seek to conserve the classic approach to writing that states the thesis early on, allowing for earning attention first.
You object to a serious reader’s response or to professional editorial judgment (I am such an editor) (as does Erick apparently in his moment of less-than-Christian humility insulting one who pays to read him & rejecting editorial input as whining: how does anyone edit his MSS? Or maybe he doesn’t need or value editors — those who value his work enough to seek to improve it so it will benefit many better)?
I appreciated the historical set-up but wanted to know what he was recommending right away. It could appear in the title and in the first paragraph without harming in any way the additional information that follows.
Thanks for the recommendations for "Shogun"and "Slow Horeses." Did you see "Silence" directed by Martin Scorsese? What did you think? Many Catholic writers, did not like it.
Thanks Erick. My wife and I just recently finished 'Masters of the Air' on Apple TV and we're looking for another good series to watch. Heard Mark Arum say the other day that 'Shogun' is awesome. Will check this out.
I wasn’t going to watch this but I will now. I remember when the first miniseries came out but wasn’t of an age to watch the whole series (it was a time when I didn’t watch much television). I do miss the shared experience of discussing shows at work with everyone who had watched the same things - it was one of those things that had value not realized until it was gone.
Please get to your main point before the end of the 6th paragraph! No need to write by the Click Bait Template for subscribers. I mourn the decline of writing for the Internet. Beyond that critique, thanks for the recommendation-cum-history.
First read Shogun about 25 years ago. The entire Noble House series became one of my favorites that I’ve read a few times now. When Shogun came out, I had high hopes for the series, and I have not been disappointed. It is masterful.
Well, I don't have any of those services. But I can't even tell you how many times I read Shogun. It was one of those books that you could read over and over and still find something new in it.
Sling Blue also provides this show.
A remake of Shogun? I didn't watch the first one. Won't be watching the remake. Plus, I refuse to watch Apple TV.
My 'Must See TV' will be Chicago & the DNC Convention this summer. That could make Chicago in '68 seem like 'mostly peaceful protests' ib comparison.
Unfortunately the series puts my wife to sleep. I need to find time to watch it myself.
Finding programs that keep her engaged is a complex study in female psychology.

I’ve been on the fence to watch it but have been temped. Thanks for the review as I’ll now watch it. Appreciate your comments.
Thanks, dad.

Man, I wish we could afford all of these premium channels.
Great. I will start watching tonight.

I get what your saying the problem with todays shows streaming or network is that they all have the progressive liberal agenda.
Some you can ignore. Others are so in your face it’s unwatchable.
A bunch of gay characters that take over the show and bump out any other storyline.
Or some political drama statements.
But there are a few that have captured attention.
For all mankind is great.
I can walk down the street and say “Hi Bob” and people will know what I’m talking about.
Stranger things can equally be claimed as having resurrected DnD for many people.
ST is also responsible for my child’s love of vinyl records and wearing def Leapord shirts.
And then there’s others.
Main point I think the fanfare is there. Just there’s lots of reasons why most shows are shunned.
Will check it out. Slow Horses is really good!
