Pull Justice Too Far, It Tears
When you stretch the law so far to grab hold of a man like Donald Trump, you risk tearing it.
We are seeing the fraying of justice in New York today. Since 2017, Democrats have demanded an indictment of Trump. They’ll finally get it on charges for which typically defendants never serve jail time. But they will only get it because a series of misdemeanor crimes will be elevated to felonies by tying them to a federal campaign finance violation that no one in the federal government has ever sought to prosecute Trump and for which no person has ever been charged in American history.
Democrats cannot be reasoned with on this. To say they should not do this is to say you don’t want justice served. But we should oppose this because we support justice. When you stretch the law so far to grab hold of a man like Donald Trump, you risk tearing it or stretching it too thin that justice cannot hold its shape. This was not the case to bring against the former President. The left cannot concede that. But that’s the truth.
The real danger here is not what the Democrats are doing, however reprehensible and demented it may be. It is the probability that Republican prosecutors will mimic the Democrats and bring charges against President Biden or members of his family. No matter how justified those charges may be, and there's many facts in evidence to suggest that they would certainly be far more justified than Alvin Bragg's flight of fancy, it would inevitably bring on a cycle of tit for tat retributions which will inevitably lead to the total breakdown of the American justice system. And in that event, what happens next? Do the vigilantes of both right and left come out of their respective holes and wreak further havoc on the American polity? When Joe Jacopina states that the Democrats the rule of law in America, he's only slightly exaggerating. Women and men of honor and decency irrespective of party affiliation will have ample reason to regret that we have reached this point in our national story, as the future existence of the Republic has seldom if ever been in this great a danger. Start praying hard, very hard, Erick, for divine intervention may be the only thing which can possibly save us.
There is clearly a level of real evil being demonstrated in the American political system and it isn't coming from Trump nor his supporters.
