May not be a great analogy, but i see the U.S. apparent lack of a plan in Ukraine as similar to that of the U.S. lack of will in Vietnam. If we commit to a "war" we must commit to do what's necessary to win it...whether it's bombing Hiroshima in WWII or bombing Hanoi in Vietnam...or providing Ukraine timely and effective weapons and support to dominate the air and reach the Russian supply lines. Causewitz is famous for writing that war is an extension of policy 'by other means.' Heritage is right...U.S. policy in Ukraine needs work and 'the blank undated checks' needs to stop until and unless there is a plan to win.

“Moore’s analysis of the trend in support for Ukraine among congressional Republicans is required reading for anyone who cares about this issue. The short version is that Republicans are growing more wary of supporting Ukraine, but they become more supportive when they learn that one, the amount of aid is not that much relative to defense spending; two, Ukraine is winning; and three, Russia’s war-fighting capabilities are being severely degraded.”

“As of this writing, the U.S. government has spent $5.3 trillion in fiscal year 2023. In other words, all military aid to Ukraine since the beginning of the war a year and a half ago adds up to about four-fifths of 1 percent of all U.S. government spending this year. Military aid to Ukraine since the start of the war is about half of what we spend on the U.S. Department of Transportation alone in one year. It is about a quarter of what we spend on the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It is about one-sixth of what we spend on the U.S. Department of Education.”

Doesn't change my admittedly 'may not be great' analogy. The evidence of a plan and will to win in Ukraine is as weak as that which i experienced first hand in Vietnam. Your citing of $ spent underscores that point, imho.

Seeing your fellow citizens raped and murdered will steel your will to win. Ukrainians just took Robotyne, and have damaged the Kerch Strait Bridge. Ukrainian special forces have conducted raids on Crimea recently. Let me guess: you allow Tucker Carlson to lie to you about Ukraine.

This is the Heritage Foundation saying they want to cut the Ukrainians off - not “come up with a plan.” Maybe Erick needs to see this.

Ukraine will lose in the long term, if you don't fight to win.

If you just stop it. Russia wins, everyone else loses. It simply locks in that naked aggression against another country is fine. Russia will rearm, and then do it again. Remember they were one of the signatories of the "give up your nuclear weapons and we will protect you TREATY, along with the USA" Stopping is like paying terrorists to turn over the people they kidnap - a financial incentive to do it again, plus great propaganda that encourgages others.

Fight to win, means Russia starts paying a price that the population will feel. We fought in Vietnam - not to win, but to have parity. Imagine if in WW2 you just stopped after Hitler gained Europe, parts of the Mid East, Japan gained SE Asia. - - not a good idea.

Just remember what Obama said about Biden, "Never under estimate his ability to screw things up". You

cannot go back in time and fix things. Donald Trump is not president now because so many American Citizens were offended by the way he expressed him self. Looking past the good job he was doing.

We put our selves in this situation. I have herd so many people say," I trust the American people." Look at us now!

We are pawns in this scary game of chess, for which I'm afraid will result in checkmate. Biden's reelection will seal our fate and ensure our loss on the world stage. He is either clueless as to what's happening or doesn't care, or both. We've got to fight like hell to not let this happen.

Well as you know, Article 5 would trigger our involvement into thwarting Putin if he would be foolish enough to invade a NATO country. In the meanwhile, I am fine with keeping our eyes on our greatest threat, China, while also giving the Ukrainians help in killing Russians.

I'm in defense. The Ukrainians need men, not weapons - they are running out of the first, have plenty of the latter. They are LOSING. I know contractors just back from the Donbas. The counteroffensive has failed miserably. Its why you do not see this war in the press. This war will NOT end after we promised Ukraine NATO membership. The Russians went to war over that status - they won't quit now because of the pledge. This goes on for year after year after year. A foreign policy debacle for the West. We should force a reasonable peace while there is still time.

We need to win this war, Russia can standoff and bomb Ukraine from within Russia until it is a smoldering ruin. Everyday Biden helps Russia & China by lying to the Ukraine about support, then not delivering hurts the effort. They need the promised jets; they need longer range missile systems. The Russian's need to know if they go Nuclear/Chemical, Ukraine's allies will go nuclear. Hunter & Joe are clearly earning their pay checks from Russia & China.

We owe Ukraine our support because the Obama administration promised them our support if they got rid of their nuclear arsenal. Obama's reneged on that promise when Russia invaded Crimea. He only provided MRE's & Blankets, so the Ukrainians would die warm and well fed. If they still had those nuclear weapons - Crimea would have not been attacked as well as the rest of the country.

Biden is playing Checkers instead of Chess.

Hmm, is Joe Biden being coerced by foreign actors or just a doddering old fool? His actions clearly help Russia and China and hurt America.

The trail of disastrous policies and bodies are not a pattern of a Manchurian Candidate trying to bring down America from within.

It is however the pattern of leftist, progressive thinking that plays out and has played out throughout history the same way.

It is also the behavior of a man who was in his time capable, if not often wrong, who is making a common mistake and over estimating his capabilities either because he refuses to accept his diminished capacity or is so diminished he is oblivious.

Biden reminds me of a mobster movie or series (maybe it was The Sopranos?) wherein one of the mob bosses was feigning dementia to avoid incarceration. I haven't figured out if ol' Joe is really that sick or if this is an act to keep him out of jail once the hammer drops. Your comment about his actions helping Russia and China align too closely to the mounting evidence of pay-for-play to be coincidence, which gives credence (to me) of the former.

I think our enemies can influence Biden's actions and reactions indirectly with geopolitics and expect and rely on liberal, progressive world views to guide those actions and reactions to be to their advantage.

While I also see mounting evidence then VP Biden directly benefitted by helping Hunter I don't think Xi and Putin are telling him do why we say or we testify against you.

"Heritage would like a timeline, a plan, and a vision for what we are doing."

Timelines, like leaving Afghanistan, are used by the enemy, they just wait.

If timeline means defined milestones and triggers for do this else that I agree. But that is predicted on us actually providing the support. Empty promises are just forcing a predefined conclusion by obfuscation.

I am so pleased we now begin to discuss how to really win or end this war. It has seemed to me for a long time the truth about this conflict has been distorted, our funding is heavy with waste, and we seem to not be pursuing an ending.

Instead all our talking heads throw up the "stop Russia here flag". I am all in for stopping them, but we need the truth on the progress and a plan on how to end this!

I am beginning to think our President/team is conflicted on this issue!

This reads like a plot from a Jack Carr novel. As I was devouring one of his latest, I kept thinking, "Please don't give the Russians any ideas."

Expand full comment

On one hand, Carr writes macho escapists fiction. On another hand, he is frighteningly informed. Apparently he didn’t sleep through the NSW intel briefings!

Expand full comment

"Macho escapists fiction" was never my cup of tea, but after Tulsi Gabbard praised Carr's books as the only fiction she's read in years, I decided to give them a shot. Between Mother's Day weekend and Independence Day, I read all six books. "Frighteningly informed" is a good way to describe him. When Prigozhin started being mentioned in the news, I was like, "Didn't I just read about him in Jack Carr's book?" I flipped back and found him. I guess I had figured Carr used fictionalized characters. Instead, his history, current events, and predictions of future events (unfortunately), are shockingly accurate.

I've become a huge fan of Jack Carr. In fact, his interview with Tulsi Gabbard first opened my eyes to the truth behind the war in Ukraine.
