Let the school staff who want to carry do so. Give them the training to do the job right. At fifty feet or less, the smallest pocket pistol can stop the bad guy

I agree. I live about 200 yards from an elementary school. A person can go there this morning, walk in the front door and walk 50 yards down the main hall and not see anyone to stop them. The doors should be locked, bullet proof glass and a person should have to be "buzzed" in, don't talk to me about the money, this country waste that much every day. It's a start

I went to my Chicago high school's 50th reunion back in 2009. As part of the reunion festivities we toured the old relic of a building. Before we could enter the building we had to pass through detector devices much like those used at the airport. The detectors were located at each entry portal of the building. Such screening elements must work since none of the school disasters we've experienced have occurred in Chicago, a city where gun issues is a continual problem.

You, as usual, are correct again!

You presented incredibly reasonable options. All the more reason for the left to reject them. I honestly believe they thrive on turmoil and desire anarchy. Then, and only then, would people desire the government to take control of everything. Wait! I made an error! That's what the antichrist will do. My bad. never mind.....

I read comments on one site that a classmate of the shooter that his classmates made fun of him because of his clothes and the fact that he had a speech problem. It seems that he had no friends, and that his home life was bad (mother an alcoholic). He slipped through the cracks at school...he obviously needed help. This is not an EXCUSE, but there were signs that were missed, and if he had received psychological help, it could have made a difference. However, as a former teacher in a school district that was in a rough neighborhood, I agree that schools should have one entrance, and that entrance should be locked and anyone coming in should be asked to identify himself/herself and asked the reason for entering before being admitted.

I have another suggestion that could gain bipartisan support. We had a primary election here Cobb County GA) Tuesday. Why would we use school buildings that are still in session and loaded with kids as polling places? Access to school buildings when school is in session must be restricted for outsiders. Use some other place, I don't care which, as long as it isn't filled with kids or don't have school on election days if you insist on using those buildings. I also second the suggestions of providing every access point in a school with an electronic controlled access system and "open door" alert, as well as an armed, well-trained, officer at every school. There are ways to secure these buildings without making them look and feel like a prison. And yes, I would pay higher taxes to support such improvements.

The school district in Cobb County several years ago requested that the county elections board find other polling places instead of using schools. The elections board has already moved many of their polling places from schools and hopefully will be able to find alternatives to all schools soon. Schools will be closed on Election Day in November.

Elementary schools in Cobb have had electronically controlled access systems for several years, and there are plans to expand this to middle schools.

I know this much...if you have a flock of lambs, even if you have ewes or rams scattered in the flock, but you DON'T have a good shepherd and some well-trained sheep dogs, if a coyote or a wolf shows up, they're going to eat your lambs. Simple as that.

Oh, and...posts like this one are "why I subscribe"...couldn't have been said better.

Just like abortion related issues, making the safety related changes Erick recommends should be passed at the state and local levels. Why wait for an overpriced, inadequate federal solution?

Two things; when every politician, media leaders and Hollywood elites give up their Security, we can then have a conversation. Secondly, we should not forget the "Promise Program" that Obama and Florida school Superintendent Runcie put in place in 2014, which the Democrats applauded. It called for schools to ensure that they are not involving law enforcement in routine disciplinary issues of the students. It also put schools on notice that they may be in violation of civil rights laws if their disciplinary policies lead to disparately high discipline rates. It started back in 2014 under Obama and put schools on notice to think twice about reporting a "disruptive" child to authorities. Again, Democrats hide issues in plain site and who are they protecting?

This really is more of a state issue than a federal issue. Legislatures and Governors and countless school board members can address improving security of schools.

This is at least the second instance where there were armed safety officers on site of site of school where a shooting occurred.

Second mass shooting in a week by an 18 year old. What is causing young men/boys to acts of desperation?

The real issue seems to be bullying. From what I read when bullying is reported schools seem incapable of taking action. No ideas myself on a resolution. This is a huge issue that needs to be addressed in our society.

I wish I could share this. I see post after post from (some) of my well-meaning friends to "Do SOMETHING!" or, sadly from some who are of a more partisan bent, along the lines of poetry such as "America IS a Gun" or "Love children more than guns" or "Action & Change, not Thoughts & Prayers".

I would share this as a counterweight, not that it would make a dent. (I do wish the typos could be fixed. We know 'they' will stoop to criticizing spelling and grammar when the logic is as unassailable as it is damning.) America has spiritual problems, many have mental problems, and our political parties have become far too self-serving and coarse. It's hard to keep the faith and do "the next right thing" day after day.

There is so much that needs to be done but unfortunately nothing will. Politicians will just jaw at one another until a new shiney object catches their attention. They want to spend billions on the climate that they have absolutely no control over, they want to jam crt and sex down down our childrens throats but don’t want to stop the killing of our children. Where were all the fact checkers on this kids social media? I could go on and on. Secure our schools, is that so hard. Take away ALL the pork money and spend it on the schools.
