Well said, Eric.

Always interesting to hear Christians evaluate the legitimacy of other Christians. Seems to be a popular hobby.

Always interesting to hear "people" evaluate the legitimacy of other "people". Seems to be a popular hobby. Doesn't mean they do not have a point and I appreciate Erick's as he backs up and or gives reasons for his points.

You Christians can fight amongst yourselves. Just making the point that you really seem to enjoy it.

You can call yourself a queen or king. That doesn't make you one. The same is true of those who claim the name of Christ.

You may call it a "hobby," but identifying false teachers is a responsibility. Jesus and the apostles all warned that false teachers and false prophets would try to draw away those who believe. Many, like "the bishop" here, fall into this category.

Many years ago, I was a student at a Baptist seminary working on a master's in biblical studies. At the time, I was Episcopalian (having finished a four-year post-grad program through the University of the South). By the time I finished my course work, I had not only left the Episcopal Church (where I was Dir. of Adult Education and worked with the Diocese of Indianapolis), I renounced all of the works that I had done in the previous seven years. My only consolation was that what I taught was more biblically-correct than the blasphemies that proceeded from the pulpit; and that I was never afraid to challenge the Episcopal authorities on Scriptural matters.

You may find it amusing to cast aspersions on Christians. I don't. It's heartbreaking because we're not just talking about preferences here. We're talking about eternal consequences.

I cast no aspersions on Christians as a whole, but only the ones who assume that their human judgments are either consistent with and/or extensions of those of God. Interestingly, I find those persons to usually be Baptists, especially Southern Baptists, who are, perhaps not coincidentally, the least educated of all denominations. ;)

(1) If you read the Bible, which IS God's Word, you can know what is/is not consistent with His will. You can also discern when His Word is being twisted to fit culture and society's preferences.

(2) Jesus was a carpenter, not a diploma-holder.

And (3) I'm not a Baptist.

Well, thank God for #3!

The dear Bishop might study Romans 13:1-2.

Care to further comment on the reaction from both Trump and some of his posse? That is, to me, the main story. And not to be ignored.

Remember that old phrase 'life is 10% of what happens to you and 90% how you react to it.'

Trump:

“The so-called Bishop...was a Radical Left hard line Trump hater. She was “uninspiring,” “nasty in tone, and not compelling or smart, not very good at her job"

Karoline Leavitt:

[Budde had chosen to] “weaponize the pulpit,” her remarks “were egregious, and she should apologize to President Trump for the lies that she told.”

Greg Gutfield:

"Who knew Satan wore granny glasses and stole his haircut from John Denver?”

Sean Hannity:

"A so-called bishop,” made the service about her very own deranged political beliefs with a disgraceful prayer full of fearmongering and division.”

Rep. Mike Collins (R-Ga.):

"She should be added to the deportation list.”

Bishop Budde:

"It certainly wasn’t a fire and brimstone sermon. It was as respectful and as universal as I could, with the exception of making someone who has been entrusted with such enormous influence and power to have mercy on those who are most vulnerable.”

Insightful rejoinder. Thanks for contributing..

Biship Budde seemed to have broken the Democrat rule that church and politics be separated. But we know that Democrats are fine breaking any rule inconvenient to their politics. What does Christianity say about hypocrites?

“have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now,”

"mercy"?

Has Trump been threatening "people . . . who are scared now"?

what did I miss?

"Budde did not use her position to speak Christ into the world, but just reflected the world back to itself as it sees itself — better than you and me." Well said. I am not a Christian nor belong to any organized religion but any human being with a faith in God/Nature/Christ or any other name for the ultimate will agree with your observation and statement.

Columns like this are why I like Erick as a commentator. Most conservative commentary complained about the Bishop's sermon but few actually dealt with the theological arguments. Unfortunately, that is in part due to declining religious sentiments even on the Right. Many conservatives are following liberals in not going to Church and not grappling with Scripture. What to make of the Bishop's point? Is our desire to deport illegal immigrants and to fight back against transgenderism showing a lack of mercy and anti-Christian? Erick is right to point out that the Bishop's sermon is partisan and that she is on record denying the resurrection of Christ. Interpreting Scripture with mercy and seeking justice for the poor, the foreigner, and outcast is essential Christian doctrine but it's being subverted by modernist theology. The Bible also teaches to not follow idols, practice sexual immorality, and foreigners were not allowed to break the law in the Kingdom of Israel. There is even an entire book of the Old Testament where God commands the Israelites to build a wall around the City of Jerusalem. Jesus's commands of love and compassion widens the covenant relation beyond the Israelites but Christians in winning converts faced a hostile and debauched pagan culture where homosexuality and infanticide were culturally acceptable. The answer was not to become pagan and sacrifice doctrine. It was live set a part but with compassion. To follow the golden rule and help those poor in spirit but also to not lose our salt. To not define ourselves by our baser instincts but to be reborn in the love of Christ. Sadly, the Bishop's sermon did not go far enough and shows why churches like the Episcopal Church are declining. She did not call on American businesses and politicians to stop exploiting illegal immigrants labor and votes for their own gain (apparently its compassion to continue allow people to be exploited). She did not call on the end of the sterilization of children in the name of affirming transgenderism. She did not call for mercy for the unborn or for those arrested advocating them. She did not call for mercy to those we abandoned in Afghanistan to Taliban rule. She did not call for mercy to the Jewish students being harassed on college campuses or those murdered by the radicals standing in solidarity with Hamas. She did not call for mercy to those suffering under the defending of police and subsequent crime and murders happening in our inner cities. Nor did she call for mercy on those feeling the weight of inflation and struggling to make ends meet. Sadly, by framing Scripture along partisan lines, our Churches will continue to decline, society further polarized, and problems unsolved.

Budde also never once spoke of Christ and Him crucified for us.

I was truly saddened by the "Bishop's" talk. It is apparent to all true Christians of whatever stripe or denomination that this was pure Apostasy, but then what do we expect when Paul tells us and Timothy in 1 Tim 4:1-2

"The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. 2 Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron".

Maranatha! Come Lord Jesus!

I will not judge but will be a Fruit Inspector. Biblically Budde is no Bishop. She is no leader of a Church. Her secular dharma is fully disclosed. She is now the leader of the Local Social Community Clubhouse. It has been said she is a big backer of the L & G clubs. Biblical Principles, Genesis, Leviticus, Romans, I Corinthians, I Tim, Jude, apprise that said lifestyle is an abomination to and with GOD. If Christ was not resurrected, then there is NO HOPE for mankind, and all that is left is dharma, and post-death there is only darkness.

When the Roman jailers asked Apostle Paul how to be saved, he said; Trust in the Lord Jesus and you shall be saved, you and your household. Christ is the only hope. Narrow is the way, and few there be to follow it. Selah

If the alphabet community is worried about being rounded up and put in camps and being killed then I think a visit to a mental hospital would be the answer along with the Bishop. This is the typical scare BS from the left so if you have a IQ of more than five you would see right through this

"Put more bluntly, she cited Christ for convenience, not conviction, and that is the problem"

One might say turned Christ into a segue into her message rather than final destination.

If the elite media can build someone or something up, then they can easily tear down something or someone just as easily. If one of CNN’s on tv personalities is neck and neck with a particular cartoon character then it’s easy to say that elite media are now no longer relevant.
