Eric...I lived in Snellville, GA until we left to return to Prescott, AZ in 2004 to walk my younger brother to heavens door. It was our honor to contribute to "his economy" but he passed in January,
2005. Our family grew up in the West Valley where there are many EPA dump sites. In the fall of 2019, my great nephew was diagnosed with what they hoped was a benign brain tumor. Subsequently, he was treated at Phoenix Children's Hospital for removal and a stem cell transplant. I so admire what you are doing in Georgia. We have terrible BBQ but great Mexican food. Sorry to hear of your wife's health struggles. Kent Ackley passed into the arms of Jesus after a 22 year battle with Agent Orange Parkinson as he was #9 in Nixon's lottery. I found both in Prescott and the VA to be severely lacking in his long term care. Mark Halperin often has a doctor on 2WAY that would have greatly helped my brother. As for Griffin...never underestimate the power of prayer!!!!

I know the care-athon is an emotionally taxing thing. There's a lot of tragedy to go along with the fantastic things being done. I was there when my daughter was one month old,. Just she was on the cardiac care side and not cancer. There are just so many scenes of heartbreak. I was able to take my child home who is now a college grad and in her third year of being a consultant. We cried with many families who were basically told to take their child home because there was nothing they can do. Just being a witness to that just breaks your heart.
Just so you know, your statement, "You might not be in a season of life where you can give anything, though literally a single dollar helps." was motivating for me. Appreciate you always- praying for only God's best for your life.

I woke up this morning thinking about my daughter being in Children's Hospital of Atlanta (CHOA) 20 years ago; I haven’t thought about in a while. Then I saw Erick’s morning briefing about CHOA. Weird. God works in mysterious ways and I thought, maybe I should write this. CHOA saved my daughter’s life because its located close to the CDC and Emory and numerous other local medical tech companies. A chance discussion at lunch led them, collectively, to diagnose and find a fix for unique problem for a toddler. The best in LA just didn’t have the technology. After a 12-hour surgery they fixed the problem but there were complications and the doctor, in this super critical situation, acted as a regular person rather than just being a dispassionate professional. He said he was worried. I asked what he was going to do. He said he was going to call somebody. I ask who and he said “EVERYBODY”. That's who you want working on your child when they are very sick - “EVERYBODY” and of course, God. My daughter came out fine and healthy. That's why I love CHOA. Thank God for CHOA.
Yesterday, you asked us to consider donating and I shared the story of losing my 8 year old granddaughter last October to B Cell leukemia, in the very hospital where this Carethon is taking place. I was so touched by the kind comments and heartfelt messages. Despite all the political craziness, creating heated and at times, unhinged responses, there are wonderful people in this community. We must remember that the vast majority of Americans are outstanding humans, just trying to navigate their lives. This Trump drama is exhausting and is pretty much out of our control. But we can pray for our children, along with the doctors, nurses, and researchers who care for them.

Erick, as a former AFLAC, cancer family, thank you. Our son was treated 10 years ago and is facing long-term consequences because of the damage the treatment caused, not because of his brain tumor. But the groundbreaking research that AFLAC has been able to do in part because of WSB’s Carthon means that future children will not have to face many of the long-term consequences of cancer treatment that our son has to deal with. Cheap goods and exported labor cause demonstrable harm to our economy: Fact.
Tariffs are costs passed on to the end consumer; this we know.
A fee charged to the global corporations who benefit from cheap imports and sweatshop-grade labor will also be passed on to the end consumer; that's business common sense.
A law that bans imports below a certain price floor, or bans the use of labor paid below a certain per-hour price, will also result in the passage of these increased costs to the end consumer.
To my entrepreneurial eye, this is a problem with no practical solution.

If Trump wants to enact tariffs that level the playing field between US companies and predatory and/or labor exploiting competitors, like some in China, he can request that Congress enact such tariffs. A good example is how imported cars forced US auto makers to up their game back in the 70s and 80s. Without the foreign competition, American cars would still be worthless after 75,000 miles.

You still want the government to make decisions about business, products, and resources. You are no different than the tarriff guys, you just don't like how they do it. Thanks - the USW's role was as hard on the industry as was that of USX's "diversification" instead of capital investment. The unions drove hourly wages higher than reality justified. If you want to see how well non-unionized steel mills work, have a peek at Nucor Corporation. Nucor's nonunion status allows it to avoid the old union "trades" lock on job assignments - permitting crosstraining so that each employee can do multiple specific jobs in the mill - something the union opposed. And wages are lower, even though employee benefits at Nucor are still generous.
But union practices were just one half of a two-sided problem. USX (which had been USSteel for decades prior) saw aging physical plant in the Monongahela Valley, and bought chemical producers rather than continuous casters for their steel mills. There appears to have been a deliberate strategy of allowing Pittsburgh-area mills to fall apart and then be sold as scrap.
John Fetterman's town of Braddock has been celebrating the purchase of the remaining USS mills by Nippon Steel: To get the right to purchase cleared by our federal government, Nippon committed to a multibillion dollar investment in plant upgrades and pollution control, programs that USX had waffled on for a couple of decades. That's government interference in a positive light, IMO.
It will be prayers alone for the time being; I wish we could help at this time: My husband and I are retirees in our 70s with rather limited savings; he's a throat cancer survivor while I've gone through two bouts of thyroid cancer. However, in the immediate wake of the thyroidectomy my ENT advised that I take a hefty, "ablative" (pill) dose of radioactive iodine>RAI. Like thousands upon thousands of other thyroid-cancer patients, I wasn't told word one about the costly, long-term effects of RAI. The chief culprit is perpetual dry mouth = ongoing tooth decay regardless of any and all assiduous home oral care. All the PAST dental work and their respective costs aside, I learned a week ago that because I took RAI, I must undergo 20 sessions first/10 after of hyperbaric oxygen sessions to ensure that the pending oral surgery on an infected, submerged molar won't result in necrosis of my jaw and other adjoining tissue. We've yet to hear what our copay will be for each of the 30 sessions -- and that's before the oral surgeon's fees.
Lest the above be perceived as a wholly self-centered Poor Pitiful Me diatribe, I'm ever thankful for a loving, restorative Heavenly Father who helps me stay as resilient and strong as possible not just for myself and my husband, but to continue trying to dialogue with the medical community to change the damning, non-disclosure nature of post-thyroid-cancer RAI administration -- while also encouraging and ministering to a small handful of friends with severe frontotemporal dementia; Parkinson's, severe AO diabetes and psychosis; and a relentless, inexorable cancer.
To God be the glory. It was folks like you that ministered my deceased husband's Agent Orange Parkinson. No place in God's economy was whining. Gratitude and more for the GREAT things he has done. Like raising up Eric in prayer.
