Mayors and Governors have, within their many duties that pertain to their specific area of responsibility, the duty to decide when and if federal or National Guard should be brought in to assist local law enforcement agencies.

Then, as events progress or digress, Mayors and Governors have thorough knowledge of their own domains, and are well-equipped to assess the levels of law enforcement needed to protect the lives of properties of their constituents.

Later on, those local and state officials will stand accountable to their citizens when election time rolls around.

Bottom line: Trump should send federal security personnel only when requested to do so.

The federal agents were in Portland to protect a federal facility. The mayors and governors have no say in that. But you wouldn't know that's why they were there from our main stream media.

Expand full comment

That's a good point, but it is specific to protection of the federal facility, and therefore limited in scope.

Another important point is that federal law enforcement officers should be, by their uniforms, identifiable as such, so that protesters can know if they are being detained by legitimate authority.

Considering the rioters were targeting that federal facility, how limited would they have to be?

And there's no general law or rule about officers identifying themselves. This post explains in detail but, "summarized, there's an affirmative right for anyone to demand a police officer's information, but the officer has many reasons to deny this, and there's no specific repercussion in the rules."

Thanks for the information and the link. I'll take a look at it.

A while ago, when I was reading and hearing reports of the Portland trouble, I heard that there were instigators from both side, right and left, antifa and neonozi, who were actively but covertly inciting riot with acts of violence and destruction.

In the confusion, legitimate protestors were being apprehended by geared-up, armed ruffians who were not identifiable as legitimate or otherwise. There was possibility that constitutionally protested innocent protesters were being apprehended and assaulted or even kidnapped by unauthorized local fascist gangs who were just out to drive the anarchy to new levels of violence and destruction.

So some protesters, when being detained, did not know if they were being arrested legally or just kidnapped by skinhead or anarchist troublemakers.

...and was their presence helpful?

Is the building still standing? Are you suggesting that nothing should be done to stop the vandalism and destruction of property?

Another note...the President does not have to wait to be "invited" before deploying federal agents. Federal law enforcement operates throughout the country on a daily basis enforcing federal laws.

Exactly! Great response.

I can't speak for Chicago, but the protesters in Portland are indeed mostly peaceful. The violence is confined to certain areas, at certain times of the day, and done by certain people such as the Youth Liberation Front. That Portland Police hasn't sufficiently arrested and subdued those folks after all these days is the chief's and mayor's failure.

Agree with your conclusion but I don't think you can use the word "peaceful" when describing protest which ends or causes violence. Reminds me the recent ABC News story titled "Peaceful protest ends in burning police station". This was in Oakland, CA.

I can't hardly stand to watch any news group now. Even the weather is slightly biased!

Erick, the radical left, the cultural left, the cocktail party left, the media (most it seems), and the bunch f/k/a The Democrat Party, are marching to the beat of a drummer uninterested in the truth or the facts.

Come on Erick. You've always been a Never Trumper. Hypocrite now?

Not really. Erick said a long time ago that he will vote for Trump in November. "Never Trumpers" don't do that.

Erick was a never Trumper in 2016. Now after 3.5 years he said as you said, he will vote Trump. Look at the alternative. Romans 13:1

I admire your ability to stress the truth, even to be critical of the President and many of the sycophants, yet you also possess the ability to enunciate reality. I believe this kind of balance has only one source whom we both worship.

One might even consider calling the media "Fake News." But since Trump said that, it is like the apparent benefits of Hydroxychloroquine, which in the minds of Trump critics inflicted with TDS can't even be considered. The media is about as interested in the truth as the majority of the Pharisee's were. But we can always hope that some media sources will eventually find the light of truth, just as Nicodemus found it and the light of truth found the Apostle Paul.

Only Jesus can help these left wing media folks just like only Jesus helped Nicodemus and Paul! Unfortunately, not sure if any of these leftist media folks are even interested in spending time with Jesus! They all need are prayers as Erick suggested!
