While you can commend both men for debating it seems that is a lot like commending professional wrestlers where the outcome is scripted. It's Kabuki theater and the only question is how well did they perform their parts. There is no actual substance, no risk.

The "script" in this case was the outcome was already known, the fix, the prejudice was insurmountable.

My only issue is with the headline. I'm not sure the public wants these kinds of debates - otherwise, we'd get more of them and fewer of the free-for-alls we now see with little substance discussed.

However, it is the pain the public needs to make an informed decision.

Here is the contrarian. DT will be next POTUS> Again, this will be to chagrin and chapping of the Dem and RINO DT haters. The blacks and Latinos are moving to DT, and that is telling. I am persuadable. But, It is not DeSantis's time. Hope to the hdes it is never a Newsome time for this nation. Haley is a lot of superficial façade. Many things are not what they appear to be.

"If you like DeSantis, he won. If you like Newsom, he won. If you like Trump, Newsom won. If you are a perusable Republican, DeSantis won. There really was little to lose for either man, barring a blowout."

I do not hate Trump. He was good in 2016 and exposed a lot of what's wrong in Washington but now, he wants revenge . He has had so much political crap thrown at him while he was president and it is still going on. That will not stop. Just think if he wins, which he won't, he has only 4 years. Wouldn't like to see someone who doesn't have a target on their back take this country and turn it around . It's going to take at least 8 years to clean house. We are not Trump haters we just want him to step aside and let an 8 year president finish what he started.

I think Trump wants a chance to finish his second term. I don’t think he wants revenge-just a chance to clean up. Over time more of the election fraud will be exposed. Like the unfolded absentee ballots in Georgia.

Oh he wants a second term all right but when he had it all he used Ex Orders instead of making real law. If after Ex Order to stop the bleeding he had done the hard & less glamorous work of getting LAWS passed we would not be in such a mess. Trump is a great showman but not a real has issues dealing with people who question him, those he thinks betrayed him, those who don't admit he knows all. -Not what we need in a president right now. Everyone is forgetting the details, unforced errors, & yes chaos of a lot of his 1st term. He will not be the savior folks think as he wasn't the 1st go round either. as Linda says he did you some things right & exposed more, but can do better. DeSantis is no showman, but he is someone that has done the work and will stay the course. Who will be DT VP? That will matter even more with Cheney & Left basically calling for a lone gunman (heaven forbid) to take him out and as you know the left will NEVER stop TDS is very real.

I will not get sucked into wasting my time watching these stupid spectacles anymore. You can't even honestly call them "debates". Here's how I would moderate a debate...Governor ______,

Do you feel our Southern border is adequately secure? If so, tell me why, if not, tell me what's wrong and specifically what your plan is to fix it. Then I would demand silence until they finished. If they strayed from the question I would insist that they answer it. Then ask the same question the same way of the other candidate, again, insisting on silence until they have. Or how about, do you think Hamas was justified in attacking Israeli civilians? Why or why not? Follow up with "Do you agree with Israel's response? Why or why not? If not, what would you do if you were in Netanyahu's position? These debates should be conducted like a job interview. As it is they act like a couple of bickering kids and neither one wins in my book, and I wouldn't hire either one.

That is exactly how debates should be handled. Seems to me the "moderators" and everyone involved with setting up the debates wants a cage fight. I want the kind you describe.

Well Hannity in DT camp so no real effort to allow DeSantis his full time when Newsom never shut up.

"Newsom just made up facts..." Sorry, Erick. You don't make up 'facts.' They either are or aren't facts. Newsom made up lies.

I remember hearing the late Tim Russert tell a guest, "You're entitled to your own opinions, but you're not entitled to make up your own facts."

Painful to watch? If you're a Liberal I guess. Maybe you should get a new job? Your shilling for local favorites Scott and Haley will get you nowhere - the American people want and need a WINNER. We all know that you think the "race" is over. Wait until the people vote. We live in America.

I was glad to see there are quite a few people who do not see it in the dismal way you do. I didn't watch it, but have watched parts this morning. And read the opinions of a variety of people. Seems there are plenty who saw what I saw in the clips I watched. DeSantis used facts and spoke strongly while Newsome obfuscated, lied, simply engaged in personal attacks. Of course democrats, who do not deal in facts at all, will claim Newsome did well. But I can't fathom how any conservative can think DeSantis wasn't really, really good.

"If you like Trump, Newsom won."

Huh? I like Trump. I like DeSantis too. I absolutely despise Newsom. Where I live we call him Newscum for good reasons. He is Adam Schiff with more hair and less integrity.

Right on as usual.

I started watching and I too could not finish watching the pissing contest and launching political bs over the bow. Actually I sort of like the two generally thinking. I think Hannity stepped out of his moderator role and started adding to the actual debate against Newsom. That’s not what moderators are suppose to do. Thanks again for your input

Expand full comment

I call BS. If DeSantis had the lead Trump had he probably wouldn’t debate and you’d pontificate about how smart he was and go on with whatever negative you could dream up about Trump.

Expand full comment

Not so sure on that DeSantis wanted the American people to see the difference. As for Trump he really is too cowardly to do an actual real debate as they don't play to his "strenghts" of name calling, oneliners, etc. I want a real President not one who plays one on the Late Show.

I want to win and Trump ain't it.

Honestly, I'm glad Trump isn't debating because Trump doesn't debate...he sows chaos, name-calls, and mocks his competitors for the size of their hands. Nothing substantive would come from Trump on the debate stage; it would simply devolve into another episode of Jersey Shore.

Trump needs to debate. Let him get down off of that pedestal that so many people have him on. (dangling preposition) oops

I recently read that a dangling preposition is acceptable in which to end your sentence on. 😁

It was painful to watch, as are most of these “debates.” I like DeSantis but when he said he was going to have a federal policy on keeping those books out of elementary education, I sort of cringed. I may agree with the sentiment but this is not the role of the federal government.

Let’s see DeSantis and Trump (and Haley) in a “debate.” My guess is Trump would never go for that. He was rolled by Birx and Fauci and DeSantis would be more than happy to point that out.

Thank you Bomber! All these guys want to grow Federal Government. Sheesh.

There is actually already a federal mandate on pornographic material being in public schools. The problem is that these books are often not labelled as porn so they get around it. In this case, there does need to be a federal intervention to prevent this. There shouldn't be a need for it, but here we are.

And to the arguments against it...

- freedom of speech. Doesn't apply to this.

- What about art books? Apples to oranges. The art books are showing and explaining things made centuries ago. The books in question are explicit, graphic, and inappropriate for elementary schools.

It *was* painful, I agree. Kudos to Newsom for showing up in hostile territory to defend a stacked deck of statistics (all quite true!) - too bad all he could do is smile and try to change the subject. Kudos to DeSantis for defending his conservative governing record in Florida. But gee whiz, Hannity should have stopped the constant talking over one another. At times, all three were just babbling away and you couldn’t understand any of the three.

Here’s an idea. Cut off the d*mn mic after an allotted time so the other guy can respond. If that doesn’t work, how about a trap door to dispatch the offender into a sweaty basement until it is his turn to talk again?

HAHAHAHAHA!!!! A trap door...GREAT idea!! But only if it drops the candidate into a pool of hungry sharks!!

I am just so glad that despite being a pc here in Arizona - I don’t know any of the kind of Trump supporters that Erik knows. I have literally never heard a Trump supporter disparage Ron DeSantis. Now, Sean Hannity......

When the tree fell on the governor's mansion in Florida, I had a Trump supporter at Publix (an actual employee) tell me that "maybe he deserved it."
