The Quiet Resistance to Donald Trump

The New York Times is covering how progressive groups and Democratic leaders of bright blue states are preparing to resist the “threats to democracy” posed by a second Trump administration. States like Washington have purchased enough abortion pills to allow every woman in the state to have an abortion every year for the remainder of Trump’s presidency in case he attempts to unilaterally outlaw it. Even the White House pushed through a flurry of regulations relating to everything from environmental reforms to business reform in order to Trump-proof the Biden agenda.

The fear-mongering among progressives is a timely reminder of the shifting political landscape happening right before us. The truth is, poll after poll tells us that if your number one political concern is “threats to democracy”, you are in all likelihood a progressive white person who lives in a big city. Meanwhile, swing state voters of all ethnicities in the suburbs of Atlanta, Phoneix, Detroit, Milwaukee, and Pittsburgh are worried about affording groceries, car insurance, rent, and daycare.

CNN’s data guy was visibly shocked at new polling from USA Today claiming Biden had lost more than 20% of Black support in two key swing states from the 2020 election. The renowned Iowa pollster, Ann Selzer, has Donald Trump up by 18 points, beating his 2020 totals by 10%. Black and Hispanic voters were a notable part of this shift.

For all of the talk on the left that Biden is fine and the polls are wrong, Democrats are expecting a Trump victory and are preemptively laying the groundwork to stop him. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. Here’s why:
