All the COVID experts who turned Israeli elections experts, who turned monkey pox experts, who turned British monarchy experts, then last night became Italian elections experts. It appears Giorgia Meloni will become Italy’s first women Prime Minister.
Some in her coalition and political party indeed have roots descending back to fascism. That allows the Western elite to grab hold and scream about everything else. Meloni is openly and explicitly Christian and a big Lord of the Rings fan. She is aggressively opposed to the push for transgender ideology. She is not a fan of the European Union. She opposes mass immigration, particularly the massive wave of African refugees who float across the sea into and overwhelming Italy.
You’ll notice how NPR frames this, with the subtle tie to Mussolini:
The coalition led by far-right leader Giorgia Meloni won the most votes in elections held Sunday and appears set to form Italy's first far-right government since World War II, provisional results show.
It should be noted that Meloni’s party is considered right-wing, but it is not conservative. It continues in the vein of right-wing populism and, in fairness, it does have its ties to the post World War II movement of fascists that hung around after Mussolini.
What’s going on, though, is a rather blatant framing by the media and elite — a warning of a surge of rightward fascist, authoritarian parties from the United States to Hungary to Italy with Putin’s name in the mix — a subtle suggestion he is spending his money to make it happen.
Really, in my view, what is happening is an absolute backlash to the elite. The elite, who lean left culturally, politically, and economically, have been so reliant on technocratic experts and held power as the world goes to hell in a handbasket that the revolution is, of course, going to be rightward.
It was the elite who relied on experts for lockdowns and vaccine mandates, both of which Meloni, DeSantis, etc. railed against.
It was the elite who pushed for expansive open borders to allow in displaced refugees to countries, oftentimes not really regulating who was a true refugee and who was just an illegal alien who didn’t want to go through the proper process.
It was the elite and their experts who brought on roaring inflation.
And it is the elite who keep pushing a transgender ideology, critical theory, etc., elevating racial and gender grievance beyond any sort of common sense. These same elite have a deep and abiding faith in themselves and their technocratic experts to flip switches and adjust knobs to give results to their preferred. These same elite drip with disdain over orthodox Christianity and true religion.
The voters have had enough of the elite. The elite long ago had enough of the voters and it shows.
This is only a right-wing backlash because the elite are of the left. The elite, with control of the major media voices, will malign what is happening and seek to woo back moderate voters. They’ll never give Meloni a fair shake any more than they would a DeSantis or, previously, a Trump. They won’t rein in their aggressive expert and technocratic replacements for free markets and arms-length transactions. They don’t want to give up control.
What is happening globally and what happened last night in Italy is all part of voters having had enough of the elite. If the elite want to take back power, they should try exercising humility and learn some basic lessons about what they got wrong. They should trust the people and not the experts who have expertly steered the world off an economic cliff.
The backlash isn’t right-wing. It’s common sense against people who think boys can become girls spontaneously and government can and should force its citizenry into behavior patterns the people oppose.
It took me the first two years of Donald Trump's presidency to realize that he was using the principles of the Constitution to lead precisely the type of anti-elite revolt that the Founders themselves led in 1776. And what's the big deal about Signora Meloni being a fan of "The Lord of The Rings"? This "openly and explicitly Christian" 72-year-old is too. It helps to realize that Tolkien actually wrote a Christian allegory disguised as a "sword and sorcery" fantasy. Tolkien's best friend, after all, was C.S. Lewis for obvious reasons.
The "elites" Trump and Meloni oppose aren't just an socio-economic elite; they are also the forces of Marxism in Western society. That this sort of revolt is being led by "populists" is no surprise, as the Western political establishment of moderate leftists of "right" and "left" have been subverted by radical Marxists. Again, read Alinsky. The logical opposing force isn't fascism; it IS the "populist", republican principles of the 18th Century Enlightenment; and if you're looking for people who are acting more like Mussolini, look no further than Joe Biden's Democrat Party. After all, at the extremes, fascism and Marxism have much more in common than you'd like to think.
Elites exercise humility? The odds of that are about equal to John Kerry flying coach.
