As an American, I don’t have to care about Elizabeth II, but I choose to.
Thrust into a role she was not meant to have and did not want, she served in that role flawlessly for seventy years, dying, not abdicating as other monarchs do. She was not born to be Queen but became it and, pledging to serve her whole life in that role, kept her world.
She’s not just a model public servant. She’s a model Christian, serving that which is greater than herself and doing so without complaint.
There’s a reason more than a billion people watched her funeral, and millions turned out into the streets in tears to say goodbye. We shouldn’t be dismissive of that because of republican sentiment.
"She's not just a model public servant." Oh, if only our politicians could replicate 1/10 her example as a public servant, this county would be in far better shape.
I try my best to not get all carried away with the comings and goings of that spectacular anachronism known as the British Royal Family. That having been said, I do confess to having been an unabashed admirer of Queen Elizabeth II. She did comport herself on the throne with precisely the right amount of decorum without once appearing to be overly haughty and aloof, which is a truly rare accomplishment, and one I suspect King Charles will not be able to emulate.
The world truly is lessened by her passing. May she rest in honored peace.
