The fact that most of the new jobs are college age is the issue. People who have well established jobs such as myself who love were they work and it provided a substantial living are now finding their pay is almost worthless. A job that paid 125k 5 years ago was good enough to provide for a family and live well with regular trips out to eat and vacations. Now it barely puts food on the table.
So now those ones that were in that comfortable jobs are forced to go out and look for higher paying new ones. Which sometimes can mean more time away from their family and lots more stress from the higher paying, but also more responsibility job.
But in effect those people who used to be Middle Class are now in the poor category and can't afford their mortgage because of the high cost of everything. So they may as well be unemployed.
A better index is the "underemployed". Those who have jobs that inflation has now deemed useless.
I like where you went with this. As I approached $100k 8 years ago things started to change for the better, we could save and go out every week. We started investing and took on "good debt", we could make impulse buys.
We are well over $100k now it's tight. We have cut back on going out, no more impulse buys, the disposable income just isn't there.
Just the basics cost more, utilities, food, gas, insurance, medical, taxes, my mortgage went up $150 mo.
The government needs more money to cover the increased cost, and we are their stream of income. They get to f-up the economy and collect more, we can't do that.
200,000 jobs doesn't help me.
3.6% unemployment doesn't help me.
