Re Ohio’s constitutional amendment vote on abortion last night: This might not be a popular view here and I offer it with the knowledge that the Democrats and pro-abortion forces are spending lots of $$$ on these state constitutional amendments. But wasn’t one of the arguments for overturning Roe v Wade was that it put the issue back at the state level, closer to the voters? Maybe Dems do have a more fired up base on this issue, but if it’s such an important issue to Republicans, then don’t we take individual responsibility to get out and vote ourselves? Why aren’t pro-life voters in Ohio, Iowa, etc. who see the pro-abortion ads getting stoked about voting against these amendments? Once again, Republicans caught the car but still have no idea what to do it. I’m just not sure abortion is the sword issue for a large number of Republicans - perhaps the average Republican is more concerned with the other kitchen table issues.
Jack - unfortunately you are correct. I'm an avid pro-lifer and believe that life begins at conception, but a large swath of Republicans does not believe that an unborn child is a human being. This is particularly true at the higher levels of the party and more wealthy Republicans. There is a lot of grass roots prolife efforts, but they are being dwarfed by the big spending leftists who make money from legalized infanticide. The Republicans are at a crossroads, and I think you will see it in tonight's debate. They are faced with the fact that the leftists are going to tie opposition to legalized infanticide around the necks of all Republican candidates forcing them to either abandon prolife principles or to attempt to thread the needle. Neither one in my mind will work. If they dump prolife principles, they will lose millions of prolife supporters like me. If they attempt to thread the needle, the leftists will hammer them instead of having to answer for their ungodly extremism.
My solution - which will not be taken - is to approach it head on. Call it "infanticide" instead of abortion, because that's what it is. Force them to explain while they are for killing unborn babies. Don't let them get away with claiming it's for the life of the mother because there is no prolife position or procedure that states that.
Place the issue in an historical context, tying legalized infanticide to slavery - where Democrats classified other human beings as not human and could do what they want with them. They are on the wrong side of history - just as they were then.
Third, be willing to pass any law that restricts legalized infanticide but pursue a legal strategy that ends up with the Supreme Court ruling that human life begins at conception and is protected under the 14th Amendment to the Constitution. Religion, tradition and science all point to this. Moreover, as scientists are now developing artificial wombs to breed children without mother or father except for the egg and sperm, all kinds of heinous activities will occur to include the development of fetuses for body parts as Planned Parenthood is already doing with naturally born fetuses.
This will call for the megadonors to stand up to fund the kind of campaigns to get this message out - but they won't because they really don't believe it's true or important.
You sir, are the problem. You and others with your Handmainden's tale view are giving the wins to the Democrats.
I will tell you what I tell my other life at conception people. I support your opinion as long as you keep it to yourself, your family, your congregation... and stop trying to force your extreme religious morality on others.
Yes, they are. It was the same in 1912 with Roosevelt that led to two disastrous terms of Wilson. You would think we would learn something from history.
The way I see it. The GOP has lost its upper-crust of big business and Wall Street collusion as that has gravitated to the Democrats. The Democrats have shed the working class and adopted the radical left because otherwise the Democrat had not enough constituents. The old establishment GOP are really now just Democrats in a different suit except for abortion and a few other issues. But the old GOP is no more and it is not going to recapture society again. Gay marriage happened. Other social "progress" happened. The GOP let it happen. The shift away from hard social conservatism is complete. And so the GOP has to ask what is next.
The GOP needs to be the producers party... competing against the looters and moochers. American workers are producers. Makers, inventors, builders and growers... they are producers. Minorities generally appeal to the producers message, although the recent floods of illegals appear to be heavy on the looter side with their hands out.
Drop the social issues debates, and focus on the damn economy.
Frank - I don't why you keep posting to me. I've served my nation in the Army for 27 years to include combat. I've been a Republican since the mid-70s and here in Virginia I've been door knocking for several Republican candidates since July as well as contributing financially, posting signs, organizing candidate forums, poll watching for innumerable hours and also as a poll greeter. I did that because I believe that human life is precious and begins at conception - as well as millions of other prolife Republican voters - not because of tax cuts, etc.
But you say I am the problem. If I am the problem, then you lose me...there are things that are vastly more than the economy. So, you make my point. The Republicans started as the anti-slavery party replacing the Whigs who just wanted to focus on the economy.
Paul, you are the problem if we are talking about the GOP losing. You are not the problem if we are talking about clutching high and mighty moral principles held by a shrinking minority of religious types. The failure of the GOP to take the Senate and increase their power in the House was because of Dodd and the follow up rhetoric from that shrinking minority.
Maybe you are good with feeling righteous and losing. I am not given the stakes.
Thank you for your service, but you and I and others that fought for our country I think did so to prevent the type of tyranny being unleashed by the Democrats. You cannot and will not win anything by continuing to push this life at conception view. It isn't scientific. It isn't socially acceptable. It isn't reasonable. You would be better off spending your time funding and advocating for services for supporting unwanted children as there are quite a few.
