What a lot of people don't understand is "default" means not paying what is obligated. Interest on out debt is obligated, social security is not.

Something will give.

Social Security - Most People receiving Social Security paid in about 7% of their income plus their employer paid in about 7 % . It is not a charity program. Alot of People die before receiving even half of what was paid.

Not absolutely true. In fact the net effect of Social Security transfers money from black men to white women.

And that 7% my employer paid in, that's my money. The calculation for my salary included that money.

While not a full on charity program it is a ponzi scheme. Today's payouts are only funded through people paying into the system today.

This is an issue of paramount importance. Massive debt and high annual debt service threatens the viability of our country and its ability to maneuver in very difficult times

It is past time to decrease spending and focus on a budget that creates a significant annual surplus which is allowed to reduce the debt.

Sooner or later this issue will bite us hard unless it is addressed vey soon.

I’m not so sure about the voters at this point. I talk to very few people, including my wife who works for the feds, that even consider the debt an issue. The Republicans are just being politicians who don’t want to lose power. If the voters aren’t going to throw them out and get people in who will tackle the issues then we are doomed.

The Republicans don't care. They're happy to spend us into destruction just as much as the democrats. Just like with The Affordable Care act, they won't do anything. If they see it's a winning drum beat, they'll pound it, but ultimately they'll keep it around so they can keep beating it instead of solving it. If they want to prove me wrong, repeal Obamacare first. They promised to do that and never have. Anything else is just the same ole same ole. In other news the frogs got stung again by the scorpions.

Secret Service disclosures. This Dem knows what it is. It is deep state corruption and they will open the door about one inch. If full disclosures were made then people would generate a revolution before the sun set. Why Blumenthal’s Comments Are So Surprising

For a politician like Blumenthal to publicly express shock over the Secret Service’s failures is no small thing. This is the same Blumenthal who has spent years opposing Trump on nearly every issue. For him to call out the failures in this situation suggests that something truly egregious has occurred.

Well, when Bod Dole ran for POTUS, He had been in the Senate as a Repub. For years all the Repubs could do with Dems in control, was to negotiate, compromise, and give it away. Dole was a decorated WW II warrior and with being a compromiser he had no chance . Having said all that; when the Repubs did shut the country down, every MSM camera was running to and fro to interview and report sad, sad happenings to all individuals 24/7 it could locate. Same as comparable when the MSM went to Alaska to look under every rock in Alaska (that is a lot of rocks) for something against Sarah Palin.. And how terrible the Repubs were to the poor. So now US will soon meet the economic reset disaster (debt) and as Hillary would say; there will be all hell to pay. Everyone should be preparing accordingly. Selah

With respect to government spending and size, we really do not get the scope of the problem.

It isn't just the national debt. Many states, counties and cities are also dealing with budget deficits. It is generally Democrat-run states and cities where the problems exist; and in many cases it is the cost of unionized government employee pay and retirement benefits at the core of the problem. The Equitable Institute reported that in 2024, American pension plans are unfunded by $1.49 trillion. California under terrible government Gavin Newsom saw a recent government surplus evaporate into a reported near $70 billion deficit. That is for a $300 billion annul state budget.

State and local government spending across the country has risen significantly greater than the rate of inflation and is just under $4 trillion per year. About 63% is local government spending... the rest is spent at the state level. The Federal government spent $6.2 trillion in 2023. So total government spending is over $10 trillion per year. The GDP of the US is $28 trillion, then China at $18 trillion. The next on the list is Germany with a 4.5 trillion GDP. That means that total US government spending is over twice the economy of Germany, they third largest economy in the world.

The problem we have in this country is too much government. We need to clean house. There are agencies that should be canceled and/or gutted. The services slashed. First we need to revisit every page of the federal register and cut, cut, cut. Get rid of the Department of Education. Get rid of Homeland Security. Cut the State Department and the Department of Energy. Ever other agency needs to pair down its mission and delete many of the programs they manage as being outside their core charter.

We need to do this as government is a self-feeding beast that will keep growing until it consumes 100% of our GDP.

Couple of points: Our debt and cultural rot are not symptoms of early stages of societal decline, they are at best mid-stage. And if it's now right-wing populists who ignore fiscal sanity, I guess we welcome George W. Bush and the sweet and cuddly Dick Cheney to the populist bandwagon.

My biggest problem with large govt spending is that massive sums of money is doled out to some people, but comparably little actually gets built.

We take so much for granted. I started Medicare this month as I turned 65. My plan is to work until I am 66 and 10 months. I will then take my full social security and continue to work. My new husband, who is 7 years younger than me, assured me that we have enough money to stop

Working so hard right now. I have a hard time believing this even when I see it with my own eyes. Am I contributing to the national debt? Will that money still be there? We take so much for granted.
