RFK and this are notable unforced errors.

Nominating Trump to be the Republican candidate was a bad decision. From that bad decision will spring many more. Buckle up.

Even the best baseball players rarely get close to batting .400. But Trump is batting much better than that. (As opposed to Biden, who had to look up to even catch a glimpse of the Mendoza Line.)

I am sure that there are actions by Ms. Shogan that justified her termination. Elections have consequences and I bet that many government employees are losing their jobs having established a record of behavior using their positions to influence elections or to undermine the existing administration. Trump does not fire good employees.

But at this point it is a difficult decision. I'm sure Trump is well aware of who was on his legal paperwork. Democrats have been so entrenched in government and so spitefull that I'm sure he is just thinking about the next Vindman lurking, waiting to leak a memo, write an editorial or put their finger on the scale against him. There will be some collatoral damage. No time to go soft. That is how democrats best us. By playing violin to our sympathies. Ohhh the humanity that Donald Trump might fire someone he shouldn't. And we go, your right, were sorry. We will slow the whole thing down and do a thorough review in the courts and elsewhere that will take years. Just like many grew soft and thought well maybe Biden is the grown up in the room. Full speed ahead, he may know more than we do about her. Or she maybe a self rightous opportunist ready to defy any president with her own system of value judgements. A little bit of team play is ecouraged and I cant blame Trump for wanting them the second go round.

President Trump needs to more thoughtful in his decisions. The tendency to overregulate and change things for the sake of change is not beneficial in the short or long term. Rapid change that proves detrimental to programs and staff will have to be pulled backed. This action gives the opposition the ability to point out the weakness and poor decisions of Trump's administration.

I agree with Eric regarding Colleen Shogan. President Trump is throwing the proverbial "Baby out with the bathwater." Trump should reverse his decision and sent an apology to Ms. Shogan. She is a patriot and has upheld her oath of office.

Well said! The same can be said for the part of USAID which has been ignored: The good part of USAID has been the medical and food program which has been quietly running since President Kennedy started it. It has been suspended. The medicine portion was for tuberculosis, malaria, and HIV. People will die when you miss taking those medicines.

Expand full comment

Thanks for the reply, Don. I appreciate your prospective regarding USAID's mission to deliver medicines to needy populations. I have always been a supporter of "Doctors Without Borders." I don't know if they get funds from USAID but there is a question that has to be addressed. You mentioned many of these programs have been running since President Kennedy started the program. That was 60+years ago. Why haven't the countries given this aid taken over the programs.

If you look back into the sixties the starvation of the Biafran people caused during the Nigerian Civil War, shocked and outraged the world. Donation and food were sent to the region to alleviate the starvation, but the food was taken by Warlords, who used and sold the supplies for profit. Are other countries taking money and aid for their own purposes and not giving to those in need? Moral questions cannot be answered with money thrown at the symptoms. Question: What is the best way to handle these world problems and take care of the needy in our own country?

I agree with Eric when he says, "It's a broken world". We can't fix it. My faith tells me the same. We can try and comfort and aid those harmed, but we cannot save the world.

Any thoughts?

Thank You

I believe this is that side of the man that makes part of his reputation for being unpredictable real and, therfore viewed with caution by many world leaders.

Expand full comment

I agree Marshall, but along with the bad, is also that the world leaders of Russia, Iran, China, N. Korea and other bad actors, also understand he's unpredictable. Biden was 100% predictable that he'd go easy on the above and waste a LOT of money in the process.

I know Erick has to give us news every day to keep us reading and that he wants to demonstrate that he is not a Trump fanboy, but this is not a bad decision. He is cleaning house across the Federal government to include the National Archives where he also is getting rid of more than just Ms. Shogan.

While she may have been her position less than 30 days before they raided the President's home over an administrative issue, she did not either have the spine to push back or was in agreement. And to say that she pushed back against Biden on the ERA is kind of weak tea. Biden was in his last days as President and if she had agreed to that utter nonsense, she would have been a laughingstock.

Sorry Erick, it was not a bad decision.

Paul, I beg to differ, the docs case was THE one real case against Trump. He screwed up. She didn't.

Expand full comment

The fact that they raided a former President’s residence when it could be been solved in a different more low-key manner made it a bad decision on the Biden administration’s part which she ultimately signed off on. Glad she is gone.

FACT: the government *asked nicely* for the stolen documents. Trump chose to “play games,” and not cooperate.

Again, the fact that they raided a former President's residence is beyond the pale. I recommend you read the entire Durham report to see the animus and outright treason (in my mind) of the entrenched bureaucracy here in Washington - where I live - makes the comment "play games" laughable.

I also recommend you read her answers to Senator Hawley during her confirmation which was listed below. Here's the link again.

She is not a non-partisan. After living here for almost 30 years now, I have learned when someone says they are non-partisan they are usually a Democrat, leftist or progressive.

My comment stands.

Erick hasn't mentioned Trump purging the Kennedy Performing Arts Center Board of Directors which made Trump the Chairman. The authoritarian impulse concerns me.

Expand full comment

I don't see anything bad or unfortunate about it. We have all seen what happened when he left in place so many people installed by the Obama administration and have no reason to believe that anyone installed during the Biden administration is going to be any more cooperative. That she made the correct decision on the whole amendment issue does not make her a cooperative employee of the current president. It would be nice if the republicans would hold their fire until the dust settles. This time he is doing it right. Yes, there will be some mistakes, hopefully that can be corrected. But anyone thinking that a wrecking ball isn't what is needed is out of touch with reality.

Expand full comment

We've no time, zero cooperation from the Dems, and the goal way too important, to be surgical. Wrecking ball, it must be.

Kathy, I'm in agreement with you. Simply because a few good things were done under her leadership doesn't make her a good leader, or someone who respects the constitution. And did Trump make a statement about it? It may "seem" like retribution but everyone can speculate about the reasons without knowing the whole story. Check out the article posted from the hill in these comments. She wasn't exactly conservative.

I did read that article from the hill. It seems republicans have a tendency to jump and start criticizing right off the bat without taking time to look into it.

Trump is very impulsive at times. That is worrisome. Coming in like a wrecking ball. Honestly, I don’t see DOGE being the answer here. Budgets need to be cut drastically. This is a start but I am not sure either side has the discipline or the fortitude to see through what needs to be done to right the fiscal ship. Not sure where this ends for our country, but time will tell. All good things come to an end they say, and both parties have been fiscally irresponsible.

Expand full comment

Chad, legislation takes time. I hope they persue it for real fiscal change, but waste, fraud and abuse is also super important and the low hanging fruit. The government is too large by 1/2. Cutting head count is an imperative.

Expand full comment

I disagree. Someone needs to look into all of the wasted and fraud, Congress or the Instector Generals are not. What is happening to our tax dollars is boarder line criminal.

They found 4.7trillion in treasury payments going to an unknown source and people up to the age of 159 stiill getting Social Securtiy money. I believe we need much more of DOGE.

I would say it is criminal.
