I was a volunteer firefighter in a small community in Washington State for about 10 years. While my record of fighting fires and emergencies was fairly modest, I did learn the mantra that when everyone was trying to get away from a fire or disaster, the firefighter and/or first responder's job was go TOWARDS the fire. I shall always carry in my memory the pictures of those men and women going UP the flights of stairs toward what, they didn't know -- and pictures of them helping people escape.
