I'm shocked at the majority of comments. This is our homeland, our fathers' and grandfathers' homeland, our childrens' homeland. I'm wondering about the correlation with gun ownership. Regardless, there is no option but to resist to the bitter end. Where would you go, and why?
"IF" we were to be invaded like Pearl Harbor and 911, I do not trust our military Brass, nor the DOD, the Pentagon, nor our Current leaders. They all think they know better, with no common sense and false bravado. Americans need to read our history. Pearl Harbor; a young soldier manning radar saw a blip that was large coming towards Hawaii; he reported it not only once but twice and notated it in his ledger - he was told by brass it was nothing. Instead of being investigated and confirmed if our planes were in the area. Secondly, President Clinton had the opportunity to take out Osama Bin Laden several times before 911 happened but he wanted to save face and not make a mistake. Instead he saved the lives of around 300 people surrounding Bin Laden, and we lost close to 3,000 Americans. Our brass are now telling our young men and women to be woke, diversity, and equity instead of training them to be soldiers to protect our country and trust their fellow soldier and love of country. Any attack might be within our country as we don't know who is here and they can't be tracked. TRUST THE POLITICIANS TO KEEP US SAFE - I DON'T THINK SO.
It's very telling when this many people come out and admit they'd hit the road for such an unlikely scenario. Truth may well be the numbers running may be far higher. Other consideration is how many leftists would join the other side?
You are correct. We can possess 450+ firearms BUT if we were to be invaded, people forget that the enemy would be organized and have trained troops, fully automatic weapons, heavy armaments, and airpower while we civilians would be unorganized, scurrying like rabbits in every direction. Not a good scenario.
Erick, your position on "what you'd do if we were invaded" in general closely matches what Jordan Peterson has said about whether the average person today would have acted as the average German did when the Nazi's ran Germany, the average Russian did when Communists ran Russia / China, etc.
Have you ever considered doing an interview with him? His being in Atlanta twice in March and today's post of yours brought it to mind. It would be really interesting for the two of you on multiple levels IMO!
Well, I'm pretty sure I'd stay and fight, because the idea of dying in a third World War doesn't scare me half as much as the idea of living through one that we lost.
I'm old, don't have that much longer to live anyway, and when I do die, I'm going to heaven, so...might as well fight, you know?
Pretty much my sentiments as well. Although I wouldn't automatically assume the heaven thing, I mean, God may have actually sent Gabriel to have a chat with Mohammed. :-)
I like the idea of humility, but does that not go contrary to the idea of asking for scorecards and using those as guides to chastise people? I am also not so keen on the scorecard idea in and of itself. Heritage lost its way during the DeMint years. Heritage Action itself is a mistake in execution. It is absurd that the GOP is chasing people like Liz Cheney out of the party while elevating people like Elise Stefanik, who is much less conservative than Cheney.
Well stated. We all profess to be brave and yet … only by the Grace of God in the moment will I know. I pray that my faith and strength are as strong as I think.
Humility and hubris are rarely found together. In extreme situations, we see our cares differently & more clearly. We should exercise the humility to admit this. An extremely thoughtful article Erick.
I, of course, know that I would stand and fight, 'cause I've already done it before! They say there's no such thing as an 'ex' Marine? Yeah, there's a reason for that!
'Former active duty Marines' get locked and loaded over people like Putin, and, although I agree with you that an invasion is unlikely, we old salts are ready to "defend this nation, and our Constitution against all enemies, both foreign and domestic"!
Well spoken! Our society has been created by many unlikely “heroes” and life-changing acts of character. Seldom has these instances been from the “elites”.
Watching the Ukrainians deal with this horrible, terrible war with such unfathomable grace and dignity does make me question how I would respond in a similar situation. There but for the grace of God go I! I'd like to think I'd stay and fight but I don't think you know until you're in the situation. What I do believe however, is that there are many, many people in this country who would not respond the way the Ukrainians have - I think about the rioting after George Floyd's death for instance and can only imagine how those people would respond. So thankful to know there are people who will fight for us.
The same folks who say they would likely flee are those who keep threatening to leave the country when a candidate they don't like wins POTUS. They almost never do, though. The questions has been asked...to where?
This speaks volumes of the divide in this country, that such a high percentage of Dems would flee, to where I'm not sure. Regardless, I will help pack the bags of and fund gas money for any Dem willing to leave now!

Also, I'd hope those who say they'd fight would do so, as Chesterton offered, because they llve what is behind them not hate what is in front of them.
