Who would make a successful Speaker? Someone who has control of his ego, not beholding to the special interests and has the future of the people and country as the lens he views everything?

It is fairly sad that Biden could even look like a leader as compared to the dysfunctional Republican House. I am reading articles concerning what Democrats are saying. They are going to make hay over this stuff in the primaries. All this nonsense because of Matt Gaetz. I would not lose any sleep over him being gone.

Gaetz is the kind of person I would like to leave the party. He is reckless, dishonest, and stupid. Those are a dangerous combination.

He needs to be primaried.

"But he positively looked leaderly compared to the House Republicans."

And if the GoP doesn't get it together, they will hand 2024 to the Dems on a silver platter. Hubris hurts

The good thing about the Speaker delay, is we won't be sending money into the bottomless Ukraine pit. The bad thing is the Republicans look like a bunch of babies. Hopefully they will not ruin there chances next November.

They already have ruined 2024. There is not a snowballs chance in hell they will hold the house, let alone get the senate and most likely not the White House. I do not think the establishment republicans nor even some more moderate ones even care if they win any of it.

Inflation, immigration, drugs, crime,, Biden, Hunter, Afghanistan, Israel, Ukraine, China, Iran and more. The stars/planets/issues have aligned in such a way that the Republicans should win back the Senate and increase their majority in the Hiuse

I'm going to start calling the House Republicans the House Redumblicans because they are guaranteeing a 'Blue Wave' next November with their asinine, petulant and idiotic behavior.

2 years ago, I began listening in the Atlanta market.

1 year ago, I became a paid subscriber because I wanted the gravy recipe. Yep, it was that gravy recipe that pushed me over the edge.

Along the way I have had an opportunity to participate in a solid community conversation.

Along the way I have heard Erick thank his members for providing the economic cushion he needed to keep from being cancelled.

Along the way we attended the Gathering and were blown away by the organization and content.

Well.... count me in for the long haul and keep those recipes coming.

Cheers

I cannot believe there is actually another subscriber who really started subscribing because of the gravy recipe. That is exactly how I got started with this.

I have known and admired you since we lived in Macon over 10 years ago. I generally agree with you especially on the Israel Hammas issue. I am probably one of your older subscribers who belong to the dwindling Repupublican party of yesteryear who is rather quickly being pushed out and called RINOs although I really think of myself as a true conservative Republican instead of the populist Trump base.

David French is also one of my favorite columnists and I have followed him and Jonah Goldberg at the Dispatch since it's beginning. Now that he is at the NY Times I continue to follow him. I read the NY Times and the Wall Street Journal to get a more balanced view. I especially liked his last column about Jim Jordan and completely agree with him. I was somewhat disappointed by your endorsement of him as a Conservative.

CS Lewis is also one of my favorite Christian writers and I totally endorse his views on courage and virture. I feel Mr French and you have illustrated those traits in your lives and they are sadly lacking in Mr Jordan and many of the so called " courageous" wing of the Republican elite. If you haven't read his column I strongly recommend it.

On a different note, whatever happened to the Baptist Resolution on Moral Character of Public Officials?

There are a number of us who were Republicans before some of these populists were born, but they want to push us out of the party if we don’t worship at the altar of Trump. Democrats don’t try to push anyone out, even if they disagree on some issues; this is one reason why they win elections. From what I am now hearing, a RINO is any Republican who doesn’t think the 2020 election was stolen. Count me in as a RINO. BTW, I, too, read David French and seek out various sources to understand what all sides are thinking.

The term RINO has come to mean the exact opposite of reality, like so much of our language. The left did most of such perversion, ruining words like “pride” but the bat crazies who think they’re on the right are catching up. Apparently a RINO is now someone who doesn’t make threats against fellow Republicans.

Yeah, well, we all thought that Paul Ryan was going to be a great Speaker to advance conservative causes. Instead, when he got elected he promptly went all progressive on us... he was a disaster. I'm not convinced that Jordan would end up doing the same.

If I am understanding all of this correctly, there was a deal on the floor that called for real cuts in spending. Matt Gaetz led an effort to kill that motion. Kevin McCarthy worked with Democrat colleagues to pass a continuing resolution to keep the government funded temporarily. Matt Gaetz then worked with the same Democrat colleagues to oust McCarthy as Speaker of the House for working with said Democrat colleagues. Now the Republicans cannot or will not band together to elect a speaker while the Democrats are united at a time when it is critical that the Speaker position be filled.

Seems to me that the only reasonable position at this time is for a 6 - 10 moderate Republican Congressmen to vote for Hakeem Jefferies as Speaker. There would still be a Republican majority and the business of the people's house can resume. Then Matt Gaetz and others need to be censured and voted out of office.

Oh nooooooooo, you do realize if anything happens to Biden, it is Kamala next then Speaker of the House in Charge! Plus listening EVERYDAY to how bad republicans are which even if I'd like to lock them all in a room with no food till come to a consensus would still be bad!

Expand full comment

Do you want Schiff and Swalwell back on their respective committees.?

Expand full comment

Hell No. There will still be a Republican majority. I expect them to reject confirmation on any such attempt to reinstall either of them. I am also confident that if we don't get past this craziness, the Democrats WILL control the House of Representative by a much larger margin.

Expand full comment

I wholeheartedly agree. But I would be afraid if there was a democratic speaker that would be the first thing that they would want to do.

Expand full comment

OK Republicans, time to get a speaker and get on with governing.

Nominate and vote for McHenry and show a united front. If you want

to bicker then do that in private.

It is time to piss or get off the pot.

Expand full comment

Why not get representatives from the various factions together in a room, lock the doors, and not re-open them until on an individual to serve as Speaker is agreed upon. This is continuing what has occurred repeatedly since 1994 when the GOP gained a majority after spending 40 long years in the wilderness. Surely, if the Dems with such a disparate lot as they have can unite behind a leader the GOP ought to be able to, likewise. This is an obligation, a responsibility Members have.

Then get back to work, pass the Appropriations bills, focus on what is important, govern.
