“Democracy Dies in the Darkness” is the motto for the Washington Post. Two members of the United States House traveled secretly to Afghanistan to see the situation for themselves. Both were in the military. One is a Republican. One is a Democrat.
The Washington Post, which you would think would praise them, instead devoted itself to savaging them for the audacity of not trusting what the Biden Administration is saying.
What did the congressmen find?
“After talking with commanders on the ground today and seeing the situation for ourselves, it is obvious that because we started the evacuation so late, no matter what we do, we won’t get everyone out on time, even by 9/11,” they said.
But to get down to that quote, you must wade through this spin happily carried by the “democracy dies in the darkness” crowd:
The visit by Reps. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) and Peter Meijer (R-Mich.) — which was not approved as part of the normal process for congressional fact-finding trips — served as a distraction for military and civilian staffers attempting to carry out frenzied rescue efforts, according to two people familiar with the trip who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk about the matter.…
“It’s as moronic as it is selfish,” said a senior administration official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to provide a frank assessment of their trip. “They’re taking seats away from Americans and at-risk Afghans — while putting our diplomats and service members at greater risk — so they can have a moment in front of the cameras.”…
Officials expressed disgust at having to divert resources and accommodate sitting members of Congress while racing to get evacuees out of the country. “It’s one of the most irresponsible things I’ve heard a lawmaker do,” said one diplomat familiar with the matter who was not authorized to discuss it and spoke on the condition of anonymity. “It absolutely deserves admonishment.”
It seems Moulton and Meijer were doing their job. But the Washington Post spends paragraph after paragraph letting the Biden Administration attack them for doing their job before letting them note that based on their conversations on the ground with commanding officers we need to extend past August 31.
But that contradicts the party line the Washington Post seems intent on holding.
This isn’t journalism. This is damage control for the Biden team. Meanwhile, what about all those people deprived of seats because of Moulton and Meijer? That’s what the Biden Administration claimed came from their visit.

Democracy doesn’t just die in the darkness. It also dies when the press becomes propagandist for the regime.
As you have stated over and again Erick, how can we expect Americans to remain informed and relatively balanced in their lives and decisions when every single thing we read in the media must first be doubted due to the overwhelming bias and malpractice they proffer? This culture is doing everything they can to eradicate truth and to attempt to conform reality to their words and their definition of them.
I really believe the beltway crowd and maybe 25-30% of Americans believe the garbage these outlets peddle. We need to accelerate the media’s day of reckoning. Sadly, this crisis may be just the accelerant required…
